The Power of Hydration: Tips for Glowing Skin in Cooler Months

Hydrated skin isn’t just a matter of feeling comfortable; it’s essential for maintaining a healthy glow, protecting against environmental stressors, and reducing signs of aging. Here’s how you can keep your skin hydrated and glowing throughout the cooler months.
1. Hydrate from Within
One of the most effective ways to support your skin’s hydration is to start from the inside. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day helps maintain hydration levels in the skin, which, in turn, can improve elasticity and radiance. While the “eight glasses a day” rule isn’t set in stone, aiming for steady water intake—along with eating water-rich foods like cucumbers, oranges, and strawberries—can keep your body and skin hydrated from within. Additionally, herbal teas and broths can be comforting ways to increase hydration during chilly weather.
2. Switch to a Gentle, Hydrating Cleanser
The cooler months require a gentler touch. Harsh cleansers can strip the skin’s natural oils, leaving it more vulnerable to dryness and irritation. Opt for a gentle, hydrating cleanser, that effectively removes impurities without disrupting your skin’s moisture barrier. Look for ingredients like squalane or shea butter, which can help maintain skin’s hydration even after cleansing.
3. Add a Serum with Hydrating Ingredients
Adding a hydrating serum to your skincare routine can help plump the skin, smooth out fine lines, and boost overall radiance. Apply it to slightly damp skin to maximize its effectiveness, then follow with a moisturizer to lock in the hydration.
4. Choose a Richer Moisturizer
As temperatures dip, your skin may need a heavier, richer moisturizer to counteract the drying effects of indoor heating and colder weather. Look for moisturizers containing occlusive ingredients like avocado oil, jojoba oil, or sweet almond oil, which lock in moisture and help to prevent dehydration. For best results, apply your moisturizer while your skin is still slightly damp to seal in as much hydration as possible.
5. Don’t Skip the Sunscreen
Although the sun’s rays may feel weaker in the fall and winter, UV radiation is still present and can contribute to premature aging and moisture loss. Applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen as the last step in your morning skincare routine is essential, even on cloudy days. Many sunscreens now contain moisturizing ingredients, making it easier to maintain hydration while protecting your skin. See a great one here.
